Writing
Our 4th grade authors are working hard editing and revising their Narrative Writing.  Ask your child how they are “Spicing Up” their writing!

Reading
The fourth grade has been working on various comprehension skills and strategies.  Each week, your child receives a list of focus strategies, skills and spelling words which we will work on in class. The list also includes a spelling homework menu and a reading passage that focuses on the comprehension strategy. Your child should be practicing these skills at home throughout the week.

Using a bowtie activity to compare two characters in a story.

If you have computer access in your home, please have your child practice these concepts and skills on the helpful websites provided below.  Every little bit of practice helps!

Your child should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.  Think about having a book talk with them, and ask them some questions about the story such as:
·         What did you enjoy about this book?
·         Is the book you're reading fiction or nonfiction? How do you know?
·         What is the theme of this book (what message is the author trying to send you)?
·         Who was your favorite character? What did you appreciate about him/her?
·         Would you recommend this book to a friend?  Why or why not?

Math

This has been an exciting month in math. We recently finished our Place Value Unit.  Our mathematicians are now working on patterns and problem solving using all whole number operations. They are focusing on reading word problems, making plans, solving the problems, checking their answers and then explaining how they got their answers.

Science
We have been studying animal’s physical and behavioral adaptations.  This week our fourth grade zoologists will be creating a new animal and habitat for the zoo.  It will be their mission to combine the genetic code of two animals to create a creature that people would want to see at the zoo.  Our scientists will determine what structural and behavioral traits the animal will receive from each of the parents.  They will also explain how their new habitat will meet the needs of the creature they created.
