LITERACY LIVE!

Literacy Live Puts Students In the Role of Teachers!

THANK YOU to all who made it to our live event today, "Literacy Live".  It was an exciting learning experience for students to be able to share some of their learning strategies with you!

In case you couldn't be there, let me share some highlights from our afternoon.

Our Geometry Experts were:  Anthony H., Makya, Brian, Noah, Anthony G., Tyshine, and Jordan.  They taught geometry vocabulary and showed it in action with words, information, and pictures.

Our Word Problem Solvers were:  Marley, Payton, Austin, Sydney, Ty'janae, Giavanna, and Annaliese.   They made up several word problems and taught a 4-step process:  Read and Underline, Plan, Solve & Show Work, & Check/Explain

Our Editing Experts were:   Kylee, Karinna, Jasmine, Skyler, Alivia, Sean, and Kayla.  They provided parents with the experience of editing several paragraphs full of mistakes, demonstrating just how challenging the goal of perfect conventions in writing can be!

The Vocabulary Wizards were:  Yadira, Sienna, Elmer, Cody, Jocelyn, Claire, and Karen.  They taught words and their meanings, challenging parents to make vocabulary rings and use new words.

The Comprehension Expert Group included:  Abbie, Tony, Dale, Megan, Peidad, and Shawn.  They provided reading selections from some of our guided reading books about movie critics.  After careful reading, parents were challenged to answer comprehension questions and reread the texts to prove their answers.

Lastly, the Answer Sandwich Team was:  Melissa, Matthew, Angelina, Cameron, Ivyanna, OBDaniel, Conlan, and A.J.   They made up some interest short answer questions and taught their visitors how to construct a detailed response that included an introduction, detail sentences and a conclusion.

They did a GREAT job!   Some parents commented on how tough the work was.  Some students commented on how hard it was to teach, but most said they would do it again!  Thanks again for supporting this endeavor.
